THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE

FIRST AID LESSON 33 - TREATMENT OF FRACTURES & TYPES .

TOPIC OVERVIEW .

The term “fracture” generally refers to a break in a bone, but even the smallest fractures are broken bones.
All bone breaks and traumas require timely treatment so they can heal properly.
Fractures have a variety of names. Below is a listing of the common types that may occur:
  • Greenstick - Incomplete fracture. The broken bone is not completely separated.
  • Transverse - The break is in a straight line across the bone.
  • Spiral - The break spirals around the bone; common in a twisting injury.
  • Oblique - Diagonal break across the bone.
  • Compression - The bone is crushed, causing the broken bone to be wider or flatter in appearance.
  • Comminuted - The break is in three or more pieces and fragments are present at the fracture site.
  • Segmental - The same bone is fractured in two places, so there is a "floating" segment of bone.

OBJECTIVES .

In this video we show what to look for if someone has a fracture and how to treat a fracture..

REQUIRED MATERIALS .

CONTENT (LESSON BODY) .

ASSESSMENT .

All NPF officers should learn, practice and understand the content of this video.
The assessment, which will be undertaken, is both a written and practical test with a final exam.

SUMMARY & TAKEAWAY .

The signs and symptoms of a fracture vary according to which bone is affected, the patient’s age and general health, as well as the severity of the injury. However, they often include some of the following:
  • Pain.
  • Swelling.
  • Bruising.
  • Discolored skin around the affected area.
  • Angulation – the affected area may be bent at an unusual angle.
  • The patient is unable to put weight on the injured area.
  • The patient cannot move the affected area.
  • The affected bone or joint may have a grating sensation.
  • If it is an open fracture, there may be bleeding.
When a large bone is affected, such as the pelvis or femur:
  • The sufferer may look pale and clammy.
  • There may be dizziness (feeling faint).
  • Feelings of sickness and nausea.
Bone healing is a natural process which, in most cases, will occur automatically. Fracture treatment is usually aimed at making sure there is the best possible function of the injured part after healing.
Treatment also focuses on providing the injured bone with the best circumstances for optimum healing (immobilization).
