FIRST AID LESSON 51 - HOW TO TREAT FEVER .

TOPIC OVERVIEW .

A fever is a common sign of illness, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, fevers seem to play a key role in fighting infections.
Running a fever is the body’s response to fighting infections caused by viruses or bacteria. Fevers can also result from sunburn or from getting immunization. Anyone can get a fever, regardless of age. People who have weak immune systems may tend to have fevers more often than others do.


OBJECTIVES .

In this video we show you how to treat someone with a fever. If you think someone may have a fever, there are key signs to look for and ways you can treat them. These first aid steps can help you treat the fever and make the casualty more comfortable. In severe cases you may need to call for an ambulance.

REQUIRED MATERIALS .

Students require a file and/or folder, pen and paper and this will form the basis of the student's "Best Book".

ASSESSMENT .

All NPF officers should learn, practice and understand the content of this video.  
The assessment, which will be undertaken, is both a written and practical test with a final exam.

To treat a fever...
  • Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed on the label.
  • Rest.
  • Bathing or sponging in lukewarm water may bring the temperature down. ... 
  • Have the person wear light clothing and use a light cover or sheet. ... Sat cool.
  • Have the person drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Call a doctor if the fever lasts longer than 3 days.
